Demolition of Air works - no provision for pedestrians or motorists

Reported via desktop in the Rights of way category anonymously at 09:49, Thu 23 May 2024

Sent to Hampshire County Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 6010264.

The Air works site is currently being demolished for another warehouse. The demolition company have not set up any system, barriers, or signage for the work they are carrying out - they are driving vans, lorries and heavy machinery over the pavement to access the site.

As lorries and vans are constantly arriving and leaving throughout the day, these large vehicles often block traffic on the road, then they swing out these vehicles to mount the pavement and then enter the site. There is no drop curb, there are no ramps, no barriers. Pedestrians have no warning or protection to let them know that heavy vehicles/machinery are driving over the pavement.

Is this site running correctly?

Updates

  • Zero signage on the road or pavements for heavy vehicles turning/operating. No barriers. Huge skip trucks driving up the curb and over the pavement several times a day. Vehicles parked on the curb and blocking the road + pavement.

  • I am somewhat surprised at the lack of any council or highways reaction to my report. How can anyone think that heavy, industrial trucks, vans and machinery that are mounting and driving across the pavement is safe for anyone?

The dust and noise is also an issue for business on the estate.

    Still open, via questionnaire

  • Still not addressed, We have vehicles parking on the pavement, parking on double yellow lines. Large trucks stopping in the road while waiting to access the building site. Huge equipment is being delivered. All the while the pavement is being used to drive on and over (which is illegal). All the while, motorists are having to drive around obstacles. Still no signage, no warnings. No ramps for the pavement - no barriers on the pavement to protect pedestrians. Please don't wait for an accident before something is done. This building work will be going on for at least 6 months.

  • Again, another piece of giant demolition machinery is being delivered and currently blocking the road. This will be driven over the pavement to enter the site.

  • Workers and delivery truck drivers are continually parking on the double yellow lines, essentially blocking lane one traffic which has to break the centre white line to pass. Drivers sadly will speed on this road and overtake the parked vehicles dangerously.
