Large deep ditch in tarmac spreading across whole road
Reported via desktop in the Roads/highways category anonymously at 18:45, Mon 20 May 2024
Sent to West Sussex County Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 5998507.
A water/sewer pipe was laid across the road, and filled in. However, there is now a "sink hole" spreading across the whole road. It was reported on Friday last week, but has got deeper and is affecting more of the road. Motorcyclists and cyclists are at particular risk from this, and some have reported difficulties on a local Facebook group

With thanks to the resident for reminding me to inspect this. It really is a rather dangerous situation and while taking these photos I noticed that traffic is now slowing to a crawl to avoid this newly created sink hole in the middle of a major thoroughfare. It needs addressing quickly. Even with a temporary repair in place the hole is 4 inches deep and 18 inches across in one dimension and 2.5 feet in another.

The ditch is still there, although the worst of the hole has been filled in. It creates quite a jolt when driven over, and I expect is quite a lot more dramatic for our 2 wheeled road users.
