Zebra crossing needs repainting and signage

Reported via mobile in the Roads/highways category anonymously at 18:20, Thu 11 April 2024

Sent to Bury Borough Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 5840687.

I live close to the zebra crossing on St Mary's Rd and use it several times a week, with my young children. Recently almost every time that we're stood waiting to cross, cars drive straight through rather than stopping. The road markings need repainting and better signage is needed to make drivers aware of the need to stop. This crossing is used heavily by children with it's proximity to the park, community centre and schools/nurseries.

  • +1 for this. I have personally been glanced by a car who failed to stop while I was crossing.

  • This continues to be a serious safety issue with continued incidences of drivers ignoring the crossing and ignoring the need to stop for pedestrians.

  • This crossing definitely needs attention. So many drivers just ignore it and do not stop. The crossing is used by school children on a daily basis as well as those wanting access to the park. Ideally, it should be changed to a Pelican crossing.

  • This crossing is a serious accident waiting to happen. Repainting and updated signage is needed as a matter of urgency.

  • Children and adults can't follow the usual rules of checking if a car is slowing down at this crossing as sometimes drivers are so distracted or careless or plain inconsiderate that they don't see the crossing or people waiting. Definitely would appreciate it being upgraded to a pelican crossing. Ideally across Rectory Lane as well as St Mary's Road as often the cars park so densely its difficult to cross.

  • This is greatly needed, the crossing links to a park and in between 2 primary schools. I have lost count of the amount of cars which either ignore the crossing or drive through whilst I’ve been on the road crossing with children. The road is used as a rat run, and will probably only get busier once the redevelopment of prestwich centre happens and Fairfax road gets congested

  • I consider myself to be a careful driver, but when I first moved to Prestwich and travelled along this road for the first time I very nearly missed the fact it was a zebra crossing because of how poorly painted and sign posted it is! I fully agree this is a serious accident waiting to happen if left as it is!

  • Virtually every time I cross at this crossing with my 2 year old, cars don't stop. It's very dangerous and needs attention.

  • This crossing is in urgent need of attention before a serious accident happens. Cars often fail to stop, crossing needs repainting and perhaps signage putting up on approach from Heywood road direction as cars often travelling fast round bend.

  • This needs fixing as soon as possible, as it is dangerous!

Posted anonymously at 14:04, Mon 26 August 2024

  • Absolutely needs addressing, it’s an accident waiting to happen and so widely used by adults and children.

  • Needs sorting ASAP

  • +1 for this. Lost count of the times cars fail to stop here. V Dangerous. Signage is awful. Visibility is awful.

  • There are several issues with this crossing and some clear interventions that could be made by the council. Firstly repainting and better signage are obvious required improvements. Further to this the 20mph zone up rectory lane to the Heywood Road roundabout is not respected by practically any driver I have seen (I walk this route twice a day to take my toddler to nursery). Better signage, more adequate speed bumps or traffic calming measures like chicanes could be added. Also the speed limit along Heywood Road remains at 30mph whereas the other surrounding streets are at 20pmh, this is confusing for drivers and as a wide straight stretch of road drivers regularly speed upwards of 40mph down this stretch. If more calming measures were added to this central and highly residential area with parks, schools, nurseries all in close proximity this would help the overall speeding issue in this area.

  • This remains a critical issue. Bury Council - you said you would take action within 60 days after you inspected the crossing in mid September and added the crossing to your list of lining reinstatement works.
