Advertising signs on busy roundabout
Reported in the Road defect category by Badgers Mount at 13:15, Thu 5 February 2015
Sent to Bromley Council 5 minutes later. FixMyStreet ref: 582335.
Advertising signs have recently been installed at numerous locations in the middle of Hewitts Roundabout - please see photo. This roundabout is *very* busy (at the end of M25 slip road) and there have been many traffic accidents over the years. I appreciate the council (Bromley?) is trying to increase their income but surely adding more distractions to motorists at this location is a bad idea?

This report has been referred to our Traffic Management Team as you are making a request for a change to the way that traffic is managed on Bromley's roads. Our Traffic Management Team will consider all requests, but often there is a need for a full investigation, planning and consultation within the local area particularly around proposed new traffic schemes, and any considerations must be balanced with borough-wide priorities. This report is now closed on FixMyStreet and our Traffic Management Team will consider this matter.

Thanks for the update. As I mentioned, this is a very busy roundabout and an accident black spot - so giving drivers more to distract them seems like a bad idea to me!

@Peter Sanders
Thanks for your comment - it seems a daft decision to me.

Reply received from TFL - apparently it's not a problem :
Hewitt's Roundabout (the intersection of Sevenoaks Road / Orpington By-Pass [A21] / with Court Road [A224 Orpington By-Pass] / slip road to M25), BR6 - advertising hoardings
As I understand you were advised would occur, your e-mail to The London Borough of Bromley, regarding your concerns over the above, has been forwarded to us at Transport for London (TfL). This is because Sevenoaks Road forms part of The Transport for London Road Network (TLRN, or ‘red routes’), and is thus our direct responsibility. I am pleased to assist.
Please be advised that we consider the potential for any advertisement that is being proposed for the TfL estate to cause a distraction to drivers. Following a review by the relevant internal stakeholders for the site, any sites which are deemed to be suitable for advertising require Advertising Consent (Planning Consent) from the local authority.
The Highway Operator assesses the impact on road safety in their function as an impartial statutory body. TfL is a Highway Operator, and has a dedicated team to assess the impact of proposed developments onto the users of the highway. Only sites which have been awarded planning consent, and are deemed to be safe, are constructed.

After being aware of a few more locals involved in accidents on this busy roundabout I thought it was worth posting this image from the 'crashmap' website in case it helps others looking to make things safer.
