Speeding on West End

Reported via mobile in the Traffic Signs category anonymously at 15:07, Thursday 7 March 2024 using FixMyStreet Pro

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council 1 minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 5682134.

I reported this problem months and months ago. You did absolutely nothing. Now you’ve written to me to acknowledge you have failed to do anything and told me if it is still a problem to raise a new report. Hopefully you won’t just ignore it this time, because it is. Since the introduction of the 20 mph speed limit the majority of traffic on West End seems to more or less observe the limit. However a significant minority do not. There are several reasons for this: - some people clearly think speed limits simply don’t apply to them - the signage indicating the limit is almost non existent - as a result many cars and motorbikes turning in to West End from Bridge Street think its ’chocks away’ and accelerate up the road. - There is almost no policing - I’ve seen one police car in the street in the last year. What needs to happen: - at least two extra 20mph repeater signs - one on the corner as you enter West End from Bridge Street - ideally one of those signs that lights up if you are speeding in that position at the end of the road - an occasional speed trap or a camera and some fines issued

Previously the council told me that because the street is of historical importance they don’t want to over adorn it with signage. This is ironic given it almost never gets road swept and is covered in litter, plant life is growing in the paths and several houses are in an appalling state of repair. Also there have been two incidents in the last couple of years where cars have crashed in to parked cars when speeding at night. What will it take? A serious casualty before you do anything about it?

Updates

  • State changed to: Investigating

Updated by Oxfordshire County Council at 15:08, Thursday 7 March 2024

  • It seems all I can do is provide an update as none is forthcoming from whomever is supposed to be investigating this issue!

The problem still exists. The speeding continues. The litter is still abundant and apparently you are doing nothing about it months after I first raised it. And that is despite you admitting you’d failed to do anything when I first posted about it and asked me to write another report! How about pulling your finger out and actually doing something practical to fix the issues?

  • And here we are a further month on and still no formal response from the Council. It does make me wonder what you do all day. It’s been almost a year now since I first raised this issue. The lack of response to my first post was admitted by the council and I was asked to repost if it was still an issue. I did that but apparently that achieved nothing. It’s pretty hopeless having ‘Fix My Street’ if the posts and the issues raised are just ignored.

  • So I have still not received a response from you about this but worry not I’m not giving up! So here is an update - NOTHING HAS CHANGED! Except one thing - of the two 20mph signs on West End one has now disappeared. This means as you enter West End from Bridge Street there is no sign until you almost reach the small roundabout at the bottom of Hailey Road. So drivers can be forgiven for being confused about what the speed limit actually is given that no signs in a built up area with street lights means the speed limit is 30mph. When are you going to put this right. I’ve been challenging you on this for almost a year and you have done nothing. Your lack of action is very boring - are you just more interested in causing as much traffic chaos as possible in Oxford in the vain hope that we will all be persuaded to give up our cars altogether?
