Refuse workers didn't empty my bin

Reported via Android in the Rubbish (refuse and recycling) category anonymously at 11:55, Mon 19 February 2024

Sent to Reading Borough Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 5598615.

Just watched as two refuse workers checked my neighbour's and my bins, moved them into place ready for the lorry, the guy by my bin walked off, the guy by my neighbour's bin emptied the one he had, and then they left before I make it outside.

Thanks to the half-sized bins, mine is full and now I need to wait another fortnight to hope they don't forget it again next time?

Last week they ignored an old toaster in a carrier bag on top of the bin, something the RBC site says will be taken away. What is going on lately?

Updates

  • * 12/2/24: Worker behaved as previously described.

    * 4/3/24: Caught worker before he tried to do the same. He told me I "'should' take it to a bottle bank". When I pointed out the council website didn't say it was required and not everyone has a car, he asked me "What if I get injured by broken glass?" Has that ever happened? "That's not the point, but I'll take it if you really want." That's why this valid refuse is in the bin. "Yes, please." He took it, after a negotiation the RBC website indicates shouldn't be necessary.

    * 18/3/24: Same story today, except there were fewer bottles in the bin, and I was sure to place the regular liner bag on top to ensure he didn't just walk away. I saw him lift the bag out to inspect the rest of the bin and look at my windows, and he looked like he was just going to take the liner bag and leave 2 carrier bags containing bottles, but eventually took it all.

During the 4/3 discussion, the worker did mention that RBC may be introducing a roadside glass collection in 2025, so Reading tax payers may only have up to 2 years of this ridiculousness to negotiate.
