Another large tree uprooted and blocking the main pond

Reported via mobile in the Park Repairs category by Alicia Davies at 17:14, Monday 22 January 2024 using FixMyStreet Pro

Sent to Bromley Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 5477115.

Due to yesterdays strong winds a very large well established tree has been uprooted and fallen so its blocking the middle large pond and birds cannot swim through it.It is entirely laying from the Island to the grass verge. This is the second tree to fall within weeks. The other tree is almost opposite the duck feeder. Both need to be cleared before breeding season but the main one is the huge one that fell yesterday thats shown in the photos.

  • Although reported in January nothing has been done with the tree. people were photographing it today so maybe it is contractors? However there is at least one bird now actively nesting as shown in my photos.Other ducks, Grebes and Coots have also been going in and out the branches. its illegal to disturb or destroy an active nest while it's being built or used. The contractors would need to check the entire tree for any nests within it that are at risk of being disturbed. Depending on how many nests they find, they may have to wait until September to remove the entire tree but they may be able to remove sections of it to prevent it from blocking the water flow if indeed that’s the case. Sadly had the work been carried out before nesting season began this situation could have been prevented.

  • Thank you for your comments. The nesting season runs till the end of July with different species of birds having different nesting periods. The team allocated the works will carry out a pre-works inspection for nesting birds, If present this will unfortunately cause delays to the works, which the team will have to wait until the birds have finished nesting and left the nest.

  • There are definitely birds nesting and as seen in photos, there are Cootlings on that fallen tree. Understandably work probably cannot commence until after nesting season, which could be as late as September.
