Lack of secure fencing around Rock Common quarry especially next to footpath number 2701

Reported via mobile anonymously at 18:48, Tue 9 January 2024

Sent to Horsham District Council and West Sussex County Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 5421010.

Lack of maintenance to security fence around Rock Common quarry which is adjacent to public footpath number 2701 and popular Washington Campsite, this is allowing children to access the quarry and use it as a playground. Contrary to section 151 (2)(c) of the mines and quarries act 1954 (MQA) any quarry (whether in the course if being worked or not) which does not have an efficient and properly maintained barrier, designed and constructed to prevent people from accidentally falling into the quarry, and by reason of its accessibility from a road or public place constitutes a danger to members of the public, is deemed to be a statutory nuisance under the Environmental Protection Act. This contravenes regulation 16 of the quarries regulations 1999 (relating to perimeter security around the quarry).
