Disintegration of highways road by The Green
Reported via desktop in the Potholes / Highway Condition category by Christine Sears at 23:33, Wednesday 3 January 2024
Sent to Northamptonshire Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 5390718.
The stretch of highways that runs along by The Green has been disintegrating badly now for a couple of years, despite it being reported in the past and nothing done. It is now so bad that it is permanently under water, and potentially a flooding risk to the cottage nearest to the problem

Thank you for fixing the original problem reported. Whether there is a bigger problem going on with the road subsiding, but it is now permanently in large flood status. I've lived here for 42 years and this problem is now constant in the past 3 to 4 years. The residents of The Green still have maintenance to do to help the dip on the private part, but it is the road that is the bigger problem. Old Dower House is getting a minor flood against their property and huge dirty splashes from the fraffic on their windows every day.

The situation as first notified to you by Christine Sears has become progressively worse and my house (Old Dower House) is in danger of being flooded due to the fact the the highway in front of it has not been maintained and is slowly sinking so that there is no escape for the water. You state above that you will be completing a drainage investigation IN THE NEXT TWELVE MONTHS! while my house is left to flood. This is completely ludicrous and unacceptable. If I do get an ingress of water I will look to you to make good any damage both internal and external since this will be avoidable damage had you sorted it before. You were first notified in January and it is now April, plenty of time to have sorted it.

Investigation: Ongoing (Defect Found), Defect Repair: Not Started - This is a maximum timeframe and we always endeavour to complete the work sooner if possible. If a flooding emergency occurs, please call 0300 126 7000 for West Northamptonshire Council between 9.00 and 17.00. Outside of these hours, please ring 01604 651074. We have to prioritise immediate safety concerns first and foremost. We will ensure the flooding team is notified of your concerns and if possible complete these investigations sooner.

Investigation: Completed (Defect Found), Defect Repair: Not Started - As a further update, having discussed this with the drainage manager, we would like to explain further as to the 12 month ticket. Unfortunately, due to the area being part of a diversion route of National Highways closure, we are not permitted to close the road and carry out work ourselves here. The Highways authority will not allow it as the road is being used as a diversion route. We cannot carry out the investigations on these drains without closing the road, to ensure the safety of our teams. This road is scheduled to be part of the diversion route for a while, so we are unable to book the road space required to carry out this work yet. Please be assured that once we have the necessary permissions we aim to complete this as soon as possible. We are in conversations with the Team that allow road closures to get our work scheduled in as soon as they will allow. We hope this explains the timeframe further.

This particular part of the highway does NOT form part of the diversion route as it is a curl de sac, albeit with a high volume of local and tourist traffic (mostly having taken the wrong route (due to inadequate signage and incorrect postcodes) hence the damage to the carriageway. You ARE permitted to close this road and I would urge you to do so in order that these defects maybe rectified as soon as possible thereby minimising the danger of flooding to the houses in this lane.

Investigation: Completed (Defect Found), Defect Repair: Not Started - We completely understand your concerns about your home, and if a flooding emergency does occur, please call the emergency line and we will ensure we remove the excess water. However, the drain line in which we need to investigate connects to the main road and not just the cul de sac. There is an with the whole line and the only way to find the cause is to CCTV the whole line. This can only be carried out with access to the main road and we cannot legally close this road currently. We are working with the highway authority to try and book this as soon as possible.
