Footpath too narrow

Reported via mobile in the Obstruction (Not Vegetation) category anonymously at 08:54, Fri 1 December 2023 using FixMyStreet Pro

Sent to Northamptonshire Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 5271155.

Whilst walking my dogs along this footway recently I encountered another member of the public using a mobility scooter which was struggling to negotiate the footway due to the narrow width. The mobility scooter was sliding where 2 wheels were required to go onto the grass verge.

  • Please can you reevaluate the works and timescales for this path. Work within 1 year is totally unacceptable. The width and condition of path had deteriorated over the winter months, and it is now dangerous and against the disability discrimination act. I am sure the path when installed was 1 metre width but with vehicles parking on the verge while awaiting access to the HWRC the verge has now spread further across the footpath. In some places the path width is around 40cm and often caked in mud and water. This path carries a lot of traffic as the only other route is over 1 mile away via Paddocks/Crown Way. This path needs clearing and made safe ASAP and a plan to prevent vehicles driving and waiting on the verge introduced. The road already has double yellow lines but as there no enforcement and nothing to prevent vehicles driving onto the verge the issue will persist. If there is not a more positive response I will make and official complaint to the council, local and county councillors, and MP.

  • Investigation: Ongoing (Defect Found), Defect Repair: Not Started - Many apologies for the delay in this update, but we have made our parking enforcement team aware of this report and they confirm that they do attend here and will do again in the near future. We receive far more requests for measures than we are able to deliver in any given year, and it is not feasible for us to provide physical measures in addition to the kerb and the yellow lines to prevent drivers from parking illegally. We will provide some advisory boards on the lamp columns asking drivers not to park on the verges here, although the yellow lines already tell drivers they should not park at all. I am sorry we cannot offer a more positive reply.
