Illegal Parking outside the Hindu Temple Baxter & Hoyle Avenue
Reported in the Car parking category anonymously at 00:18, Sun 5 April 2009
Sent to Newcastle upon Tyne City Council 2 minutes later. FixMyStreet ref: 52032.
The Hindu Temple on the West Road in Fenham Newcastle, is causing huge tensions with its neighbours and people in the neighbourhood, by allowing their visitors to park where ever they choose and blocking the public highway.
This is preventing residents in the surrounding streets from accessing their own driveways.
The situation is now becoming intolerable and causing unnecessary stress to the residents in the surrounding streets.
I have been unable to have access to my own driveway on several occasions and a friend of mine even received a ticket very unfairly because they could not park outside my house when visiting me. I have also waited hours to be able to get off my own driveway and missed several important appointments due to this.
It has also been brought to my attention that the Temple only has licence to host late night functions, on the basis that their visitors use the spaces allocated to them at the westgate sports centre car park, which has more than sufficient space for them, but they don't use them!!
If they did inform their visitors to use the sports centre car park I am sure this would clear the surrounding streets from becoming blocked.
Despite asking anyone who has blocked my access to not continue blocking me in or out, several visitors appear to take no notice and park where ever they choose, regardless of the fact they are blocking the highway and causing unnecessary stress to the residents. We are made to feel intimidated by the negative response and lack of respect from the offenders that are parking.
I am also very concerned about the fact that the emergency services would have no clear access to the properties near the temple or the temple itself, if the situation ever arose!
I am actively seeking some assistance with this matter from the council and any residents who have had similar problems due to the parking, as I have had no positive response from the temple owners (elders in their community) and the visitors I have spoken to. I propose something to be done sooner, rather than later as this has been a problem for longer than it should have been.

This remains to be a major problem for residents and although facilities have been provided for car parking at the sports centre for visitors to the temple, the temple and their visitors continually show a blatant disregard for resident’s within the area – blocking driveways so people either cannot get in or out of their properties.
Residents cannot be expected to live their lives around others, if someone would like or must take their car off the drive, then they shouldn’t have to be sat waiting for an unknown period of time for an inconsiderate person to unblock their drive..
