Gate very difficult to navigate on horseback

Reported via mobile in the Potholes / Highway Condition category by BHS County Access & Bridleways Officer at 19:25, Fri 22 September 2023 using FixMyStreet Pro

Sent to Northamptonshire Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 5022685.

Reporting on behalf of local riders. Gate is very difficult to navigate. The chain that is used to keep gate closed is quite short so need to hold gate very close to adjoining post to get chain over. Difficult to do on horseback with one free hand. This is also made more difficult due to uneven terrain (cobbles). I believe gate used to have latch with long handle which was much more horse rider friendly. The cobbles weren’t so much of an issue when it was possible to open gate standing further away, but now have to stand much closer as chain difficult.

  • Investigation: Completed (Defect Found), Defect Repair: Rejected

Posted by Northamptonshire Highways at 14:52, Fri 3 November 2023

  • Investigation: Completed (No Action Necessary), Defect Repair: Rejected - Unfortunately, having investigated the ownership of this gate further, we have had to cancel this work. The gate is privately owned by the landowner, and not on a bridleway. As such, we cannot carry out work on a private gate and they are not required to put latches on this gate.
