Horses using alleyway

Reported via desktop in the Pavements/footpaths category by Robert Henry Bennett at 14:39, Fri 8 September 2023

Sent to Milton Keynes Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4973121.

I have reported to my local council member that on occasions horses are ridden along the full length of the alleyway that runs adjacent to my property at 12 Hill View Newport Pagnell MK16 8BE. As you can see from the attached photograph there is no room for anyone coming in the opposite direction to pass. Elderly disabled people and women with small children use this alleyway frequently. The widening of the barriers makes it much easier for horses. bicycles and electric scooters to have free, open and unrestricted access to the alleyway. I challenged the riders who in reply said that the prohibiting sign displayed meant the horses are permitted to use the route. I pointed out that the opposite was in fact the case. Its only a matter of time before there is a serious incident between horses and pedestrians. Robert Bennett

  • Apparently sufficient measures are in place to prevent this from happening (sign, gate) but a sign can only do so much. Unfortunately unless they are caught in the act then nothing can be done and neither the council or the authorities can police this alley way 24/7. It's all down to lack of highway code knowledge that these horse riders should really know better. Perhaps kindly approach and educate them on the meaning of the red circle. I know it's not an ideal outcome but all the council could really do is redesign the gate so its narrower.
