Degraded road surface, danger to cyclists

Reported via desktop in the Pothole category anonymously at 08:37, Thu 13 July 2023 using FixMyStreet Pro

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council 1 minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4781620.

There has been an assessment of the degraded road surface near the road edge just past the no 6. Jurys Inn bus stop. Could I respectfully query the criteria used for assessing that this surface is not sufficiently degraded to warrant an immediate fix. It is a clear danger to cyclists coming from the roundabout. The degradation has really happened since the bus route was changed to traverse this section of Godstow Road. Is there no assessment of the impact of such route changes, as the heavy double decker buses thunder past and cause the houses to rattle.

  • Hello, the criteria for intervention of carriageway surface is the depth needs to exceed 40mm. The area has degregation but on the deepest part it still doesn't meet 40mm however it is close so on this instance I will raise 1 to be repaired for the deepest one shown and the whole area should be getting resurfaced next year but we will monitor this in the meantime for intervention level defects until it gets resurfaced

  • I cycled along here earlier this week. The road surface is dreadful. The whole length of the Godstow Road is in such a bad state that it is a challenge to cycle - in order to avoid the potholes it is necessary to move out towards the middle of the road in many places. This spot is the worst though. The council is keen to encourage more cycling but 40 mm is a very deep hole if that's the criteria for repair. As a cyclist I would be wary of hitting a hole 20 mm deep. I've had to replace my cycle wheels every few years at cost of over £100 because of the potholes.
