Hedges grow out into highway
Reported via iOS in the Roads/highways category anonymously at 12:09, Thu 22 June 2023
Sent to West Sussex County Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4704074.
From the electric sub station to the south end of Shaveswood Lane, the hedges on the East side have not been cut back for ages and are now narrowing the carriage way causing some vehicles to use both sides of the lane. It is particularly bad opposite Wickwoods and at the junction with the A281 where Road signs cannot be seen until with six metres of signs. All need cutting back to one metre from the edge of the highway.

Council say that the hedges which are privately owned, cannot be cut back until after 01/09/2023 to allow for birds etc to finish nesting. But I know that road side hedges can be cut back anytime if it is a road safety issue. WSCC need to put pressure on private land owners to keep the hedge etc trimmed back from the highway and to a minimum height of 5.2 metres. This work if carried out every Autumn would then keep the growth behind the highway boundaries.

Three months have passed and Still no action by WSCC highways to get the owners of the hedges cut back one metre beyond the highway edge. This would allow visibility of the road signs and traffic could use full width of carriageway instead of being on middle of the road.
