Massive Thistle infestation on Roundabout/Island in Lynwood Grove

Reported via desktop in the Young Tree Requires Maintenance category anonymously at 14:34, Friday 9 June 2023 using FixMyStreet Pro

Sent to Bromley Council 1 minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4651657.

As you can see in the attached photos, the whole roundabout/island in Lynwood Grove, opposite #45-#49 (and other side or road), is covered in 1+ metre high thistles.

These appeared, as they have done in previous years, shortly after the council employed agency came along and mulched the ground.

Clearly the mulch was populated with thistle seeds .. as it was in previous years!

There has, to our knowledge, not been any visit to check on the state of the vegetation since the mulch was put down weeks ago.

If these thistles are not removed soon then they will be allowed to grow until they have seed heads and then every garden in the local vicinity will be affected and we shall all have thistles in our own private gardens.

Can the council please re-engage with their agency and tell them to come back and clean up this public space vegetation mess that they have caused .. to prevent the same happening in our private garden spaces.

Many thanks

  • Further news .. there are also many deadly nightshade plants growing amongst the thistles now .. and these are dangerous! Most of the thistles now have flowers and they have grown a few feet since my initial report. I shall be notifying the local houses that I have reported this issue. Are there any "rules" that say that I, and local residents, cannot take action ourselves and attack the thistles .. before they grow any bigger and start casting their seeds into the air .. which will then infest local gardens?

  • I concur with the above. As a local resident near the roundabout, I am concerned about these thistles having seed heads and spreading thistles to neighbouring properties. There needs to be a proper plan for this roundabout so that the thistles don't continue to be a problem and regrow from any remaining thistle roots that may be left behind.
