Tree damaged by severe fire possibly now dangerous

Reported via desktop in the Tree Vandalised category anonymously at 10:52, Saturday 3 June 2023 using FixMyStreet Pro

Sent to Bromley Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4626402.

Joyriders crashed a car outside 80 Lynwood Grove, which was set alight turning into an inferno, damaging the road and burning partially the large chestnut tree to its full height. I am concerned that given the size of this tree that it may now be dangerous and branches my fall on the public walking beneath it. It may be that it is bad enough to need removal.

  • Thank you for your enquiry. It is very sad what has happened to the Horse Chestnut. The tree was inspected yesterday and requires no intermediate intervention; the fire has damaged one quadrant of the canopy and scorched the ground on one section of its rooting environment. With fire damaged trees, it depends upon how thick the bark is to how well it reacts to damage and Horse Chestnuts are very resilient and are thought to come from Turkey which has much hotter climates than ours. The tree will be monitored to see how well it reacts to the damage and works raised as required possibly to crown reduce the tree or to prune out the dead/damaged. Separately the Maple opposite has dead/damaged in its canopy overhanging the road which works are raised. If anyone on the street has video evidence of the tree being damaged we would be grateful as we would be able to pursue damage caused to the tree.
