Hazardous road surface
Reported via desktop in the Road Defect category anonymously at 16:53, Friday 12 May 2023
Sent to Bromley Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4547565.
I am writing to express my grave concern regarding the hazardous condition of the surface of Main Road, Biggin Hill. As you will be aware from the many reports registered on ‘FixMyStreet’ over a long period of time there are numerous deep potholes and sunken drains on the Southbound stretch of the road between Edward Road and Hawley’s Corner. In particular the area South of ‘The Aperfield Inn’ is treacherous. As a primary route this road is used extensively by heavy goods vehicles and buses and therefore needs to be of reasonable condition. It is also a route heavily favoured by cyclists who in order to avoid the numerous hazards are forced to take an unpredictable path thus posing a very real risk of collision. It is evident that a number of repairs have been undertaken in previous months none of which appear to have been of an acceptable standard. Much of the road is now breaking up causing damage to vehicles and cycles. It is only a matter of time before a serious injury is caused. Inevitably the Borough will find itself liable in such circumstances at considerable cost.
I would therefore wish to know what the action is being taken to resolve this hazardous situation and what the timescale is for such action.

Sections of the road have been resurfaced but it is evident that the work has not been done to an appropriate standard. Also all of the drain and manhole cover have been left below the surface of the road. These result in a continuing hazard and will quickly lead to more damage.

Despite extensive resurfacing many of the drain and manhole covers have been left below the level of the road surface. This continues to create significant hazards and potential vehicle damage as well as leading to further breaking up of the road surface.

The extensive number of sunken drain covers on both sides of Main Road, Biggin Hill, particularly from the South Street are to Hawleys Corner have not been addressed and continue to pose a significant hazard. Damage is caused to vehicles and cyclists are forced out into the road to avoid them.

The resurfacing work has boot been done to an acceptable standard. In this section of road there are still in excess of 20 sunken drain and manhole covers which remain a significant hazard
