Severe potholes on Kiln Road, Fareham
Reported via iOS in the Rights of way category by Roger Wilson at 20:50, Fri 10 March 2023
Sent to Hampshire County Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4300029.
I see there are already three reports of these awful examples of potholes along this busy stretch of road going back as far as January. It seems clear that nobody takes any notice if this website’s reports as I guess it’s cheaper to pay motorists who claim damage to their vehicles than it is to just get on and repair the holes. I am very disappointed at this as this site used to get a response. I even once got a detailed reply from Southampton City which was helpful. No such luck with Hampshire Highways who appear to have given up any effort to keep on top of the appalling state of our roads.

Within a couple of days of my posting, the reported potholes were filled. Looked okay when driving over the areas although it still seemed to just be filled with loose material. I noted yesterday that the holes were reappearing so whatever was used has had little long-lasting effect. I have lived at the Funtley end of Kiln Road for 52 years and to my memory the road has been re-surfaced only once in that time, maybe 35 years ago. Even then it was simply top-dressed and no attention given to sorting imperfect manhole/drain covers etc. In the ensuing years we have had cable laying in the pavements leaving them uneven, water main replacement and gas main replacement leaving poor reinstatement. The simple facts are that Kiln Road is simply one more example of a total failure of successive administrations to attend to our roads. No recognition is given to natural increases in road traffic and the impacts of housing developments on the road system. I could go on!

Following my report of the issues in Kiln Road I contacted my Councillor (Mrs Pamela Bryant) who provided a swift and sympathetic response but seemed to be as frustrated and powerless as all of us in respect of Hampshire Highways policy of simply back-filling the potholes and ignoring the proper dealing with the developing defects as well. The fact is that without proper resurfacing of the whole road (and numerous others in a similarly appalling state), the roads will ultimate become unusable by anyone. How long do we have to wait for proper action to resolve this situation?
