  • Although the initial problem was indeed dealt with (as our house shook too) the manhole cover is making a loud noise every time a car goes over it which is unavoidable for the cars due to the cover's location. This is causing us issues especially at night when we are trying to sleep. Please could someone come out and finish this job off to alleviate this problem.

  • The noise is worse than ever and the house is shuddering again when big trucks/buses go past. It is hard to sleep when there is traffic outside for myself and young family. The condition of the road around the grid is worsening (see pics) and you say that it is a Thames Water problem but it was Bromley who did the repairs initially which were not done properly in the first place. Please give us an updat on this asap as it is getting beyond a joke now.

  • Myself and a neighbour have had a word with Stuart - the contractor for Cappagh - who has 'repaired' the job. The tarmac that has been put over the manhole cover is aready moving when cars and vans go over it. The contractor admitted himself that this will not last...like the last repair. I believe he is calling the office for further instructions. Please could a more permanent solution be found as this is putting a plaster over an open wound - it will not last. I can already hear the manhole cover under the tarmac making a noise from the house.

  • Thank you for your comments, Cappagh are a contractor for Thames Water and not Bromley, we have referred the ongoing issue with this cover to Thames Water.

  • When I spoke to the contractor and asked who he worked for, the response was Bromley Council. Forgive me if I'm confused.

  • To keep you updated, the problem with the manhole cover is back. The last few days, our house has been shaking and we knew that thus would mean soon the noise would be back. Sure enough it's begun. I have reported it to Thames Water but am also letting you know.

  • Having spoken with Thames Water, the manhole cover is NOT theirs. It is on their plans but not as one of their covers so the issue is NOT with Thames Water. Bromley need to come and erect safety barriers around the manhole off, lift the manhole and find out who it does belong to: Highways Agency, BT, etc. Temporary lights then need installing so that whoever this DOES belong to can fix it and it needs to be fixed properly and given time for the repair to dry properly. Someone coming along and putting temporary tarmac on is like putting a plaster on a gaping wound. I am in the process of contacting ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH due to the constant noise and the fact that my house shakes. This CANNOT be good.

  • Having done some research, and knowing from Thames Water that this is manhole isn't theirs but is 'privately owned', there's a good chance there's a rainwater soakaway under that manhole (as there are others close by) which means a dirty big hole which will be exposed when the remaining tarmac finally crumbles. The bottom of the manhole can be seen already. The result of a collapse if this IS the case isn't an option any party wants. Someone needs to lift this manhole cover and get a handle on what is under it. I have informed Environmental Health as well Robert Neill MP. Let's get something done.

  • Someone came out to 'fix' the problem. The noise is as bad as ever. There is evidence of some new tarmac which is ineffective and hasn't done anything to solve the issue - a proper fix needs to be done. They wouldn't say who they worked for which I found interesting but it wasn't Thames as it's not their manhole. Bob Neill has been in touch and promised to pass this to the relevant people and there is an ongoing 'job' lodged with Environmental Health. I am worried about the houses around the manhole as they shake when large lorries and buses go past along with the incessant noise. What is the update from your end please Bromley? Will this be properly fixed soon? We rely on our council in these matters.
