Ridiculous speed restrictions on A66

Reported via desktop in the Roadworks (NH) category anonymously at 13:59, Tue 29 November 2022

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 4002900.

Without using the safety for all cliche, Can someone explain why there is 40mph speed limit on both sides of A66 all day, when its only night work taking place, no lanes are out and are at full width with barriers still in place? Near Stockton there is a 50mph restriction but with men working daily in the road, narrow lanes and temp barriers. (no speed cameras). As there are average speed cameras on the 40 mph bit both ways it looks like a money making exercise. Maybe the National highways xmas party is a bit low on funds this year

Updates

  • Thank you for your report concerning the speed restrictions on the A66.

The main reason for the 40mph is safety. The barrier is still in place in some sections but has been de-tensioned while the work is being carried out so it would be unlikely to stop vehicles from crossing over into oncoming traffic. The sections where the barrier has been removed also exposes light columns which would normally be protected from strikes.

The Stockton works are much smaller in scale and the barrier there is still fully tensioned, hence the higher speed limit.

    Kind regards
