Lack of road sign

Reported in the Road traffic signs category by F Lobo at 22:06, Wed 30 October 2013

Sent to Leicester City Council 3 minutes later

Can we please have 2 "PLEASE MERGE IN TURN" signs, where 2 lanes become 1, just before the railway bridge. This will stop drivers jostling and from getting very irritated.

  • Received the following reply from the council:
"Thank you for your suggestion that a "merge in turn" traffic sign is installed on the A47 Humberstone Road at the start of the eastbound bus lane (under the railway bridge). I must point out that the Council as the local traffic authority are only empowered to install traffic signs as permitted under the Statutory Instrument "Traffic Signs Regulations & General Directions" 2002 (known as the TSRGD 2002). A "merge in turn" traffic sign is not contained in the TSRGD 2002. Unfortunately this means that the Council would be acting beyond their powers to install such a traffic sign and therefore cannot comply with your suggestion.

It is possible that the reason a "merge in turn" traffic sign is not included in the TSRGD 2002 is that drivers are expected to know how to manoeuvre in merging traffic because advice on this is given in the highway code."
    I replied: "
I appreciate your immediate response to my suggestion. The reason for my request is the experience I encounter every evening on my drive home from work. The theory of the highway code does not easily translate into practice, when car users are stuck in a long line of traffic every evening. Their frustration leads to deliberate blocking of drivers trying to merge from the left.

I have noticed similar signs elsewhere and they serve their purpose, e.g. as you come off the A46 ring road and head towards Anstey Lane in the direction of the city. Hence my suggestion for Humberstone Road".

The chaos contnues every night between 5 - 6.30pm!
