HGV’s & speeding traffic

You are incorrect, the “unsuitable for HGV” signage was in place for 20+ years prior to repairs to Westmill bridge being required and your reply does not address the speeding traffic and damage to the recently resurfaced carriageway caused by the volume of HGV’s. The Nature of the road also determines wether or not it is suitable for HGV’s not just the weight capacity of the Bridge.

Thank you for your report. The previous signage was installed due to the condition of the bridge structure, the bridge itself has been repaired and is now capable of carrying loads up to 40 tonnes, this is why the signage was removed.

Oxfordshire County Council Unfortunately we can’t fix every issue reported on FixMyStreet. Councillor Tim Bearder explains why. map.jpeg Speeding and heavy Traffic
Since the A420 has had road works the B4508 has become a rat run and we get really heavy vehicles plus extra traffic travelling at great speed down this road. There used to be ‘unsuitable for large vehicle ‘ signs at either end of the road but they have been removed. Some lorries that come down here are as wide as the road. Currently there is no speed reduction on this road from the A420 although there are concealed driveways to private residences and slow moving farm vehicles and animals. We feel we need speed reduction and signage reinstated to discourage large vehicles using this road

The B4508 between the A420 and the County Boundary is wide enough for two goods vehicles to pass apart from a small section by the bridge for which there are warning signs in both directions to alert drivers that the road narrows at that point, the bridge itself has no issues that would warrant limiting the size of vehicles permitted to traverse it. With regard to a reduction in the speed limit, vehicles should always drive to the conditions rather than the posted speed limit, we would be happy to investigate lowering the speed limit if funding can be found/provided.
