Cycle lane is in breach of Highway Code. Serious and immediate threat to life.

Reported via desktop in the Roads/highways category anonymously at 23:10, Sun 25 September 2022

Sent to Leicester City Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 3848307.

The 500m stretch of cycle lane on Knighton Lane East, between Aston Hill and Welford Road, poses a serious and immediate threat to the life of any cyclist that uses it.

The lane places cyclists within the door opening zone of all the vehicles that are parked along it. This is in clear breach of the highway code.

There is a further threat to the safety of the cyclists if they decide to use the main carriage way instead of the cycle lane, where they will be subject to the anger, abuse and threatening behaviour of motorists who will be unable to safely pass the cyclist and cannot understand why the cyclist is not using the cycle lane.

This situation encourages dangerous close passing by motorists.

The whole 500m stretch of road is extremely dangerous and life threatening to cyclists.

The best and safest option would be to remove the life threatening cycle lane completely and replace it with a vehicle free crosshatch area to mark the dangerous door opening zone.
