Gate doesn’t open far enough to get off busy road
Reported via mobile in the Gate - Damaged/ Missing category anonymously at 20:10, Sun 18 September 2022 using FixMyStreet Pro
Sent to Northamptonshire Highways less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 3833256.
The gate is downhill and hasn’t a proper bridleway handle but the main issue is that it doesn’t open wide enough to get through unscathed. It is about 4ft off the road but also just on a hump back bridge so the gate needs to be easily opened as the horses bum is on the road and people coming in the opposite direction over the bridge may not see you.

Visited by the British Hose Society Access Field Officer 9 October. Please update as 'closed' status does not indicate action taken by Highways. This bridleway gate is set too close to a 60mph road beside a hump backed canal bridge so must be easy to open and have sufficient refuge off road. There is insufficient space for one horse so any groups of riders would be waiting on the road and unseen by MPV's approaching. The gate should be 2 way opening - it currently opens uphill only so risks catching the horse and rider as it does not open to 90 degrees and closes too quickly. A hunters handle should be fitted to the gate to enable horse riders to open the gate with one hand whether mounted or from the ground. The vegetation around the gate needs to be cut back to improve manoeuvring space, refuge and sightlines. Please see our guidance re gates and gate installation available from: https://www.bhs.org.uk/ go-riding/ leaflets-and-downloads/

26 January 2023 photo taken. Gate post on latch side has fallen over therefore gate is not secure and there is debris on the ground creating a further obstacle. This is an opportunity to a) replace the gate with a user friendly gate to BS standard for bridleway, b) negotiate with the landowner to recess the gate further off the road c) cut back vegetation around the gate, up to the bridge and similar distance away from the bridge to improve sightlines for drivers on the road and bridleway users exiting onto the road as well as giving more space for refuge when opening or closing gate from the road side.
