Serious subsidence

Reported via desktop in the Other (non-highways) category anonymously at 10:00, Fri 9 September 2022

Sent to Hampshire County Council and New Forest District Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 3813648.

The entire road structure along Deerleap Lane is experiencing serious subsidence and will shortly become dangerous to drive along. The subsidence affects the full width of the carriageway and starts shortly after joining the road from the A35 at the northern end of Deerleap Lane and continues for approximately 1km. Further along the road, and from where its name changes to Arters Lawn there is sporadic subsidence, but the worst area is the northernmost section.

Updates

  • While it was encouraging to receive an acknowledgement of the issue from Hampshire Highways, and a temporary "Uneven Surface" warning sign has been placed on the verge at the junction with the A35 at Colbury, the surface continues to deteriorate noticeably and it will not be long before it is actually dangerous to drive or ride along.

  • I travelled the road this afternoon for the purpose of responding to your question and have to report that unfortunately nothing has been done to repair the subsiding road surface. On the plus side, the deterioration does not appear to have worsened, but the road remains in a pitiful state and hopefully nobody will lose control of their vehicle and crash before it finally gets repaired.

  • The temporary sign for Uneven Road at the Colbury (Northern) end has been replaced with a permanent sign so at least people will be warned that the surface is dangerously uneven.

  • Some mildly laughable attempts have been made to improve the comedy road surface with small patches of gravelly tarmac. Wholly inadequate when the entire roadway needs removing and a better substrate installing before re-laying the road properly. Must do better.

  • No improvements attempted.

  • Nope, no changes, no improvements, the road remains uncomfortable and slightly unsafe to drive along. Given its minor status and the truly abysmal state of major roads within the county I don't expect improvements any time soon.
