Verge damage causing water to bypass drain in Rosary Lane
Reported in the Roads/highways category anonymously at 15:47, Sun 30 June 2013
Sent to Warwickshire County Council 3 minutes later. FixMyStreet ref: 369050.
Damage to the grass verge, caused mainly by refuse collection vehicles backing to the far end of this narrow cul-de-sac (until relatively recently, the wheelie bins from the furthest two properties were collected on foot), has left the drain serving the lowest point in the road stranded half a metre from the effective road edge, leading to localised flooding following heavy rain. The County Highways Department is aware of the problem, but is reluctant to relocate the drain or to reinstate the verge whilst the District Council refuse collection contractors continue to insist on backing their vehicles up this narrow road.

The report was acknowledged by the Council on 4th July, but nothing has happened since (but, then, nothing had happened since I and a neighbour independently reported the problem direct to the Council in early February, followed by several reminders).

Nothing has changed. The County Council Highways Dept is reluctant to spend money on reinstating the verge or relocating the drain while the District Council's refuse disposal contractor (whose vehicles have caused the damage) remains unwilling to discontinue their current practice of reversing their vehicles to the far end of this narrow lane and to revert to the earlier, long-standing practice of collecting wheelie bins on foot from the two properties at the end of the lane.

Refuse collection contractors have finally been persuaded not to back their vehicles to the end of the lane. Damaged area has been marked. All that's needed now is for the verge to be reinstated, hopefully with a solid kerb to prevent future damage. Watch this space!

Heavy rain today, so flooding once again. The road has been marked to indicate where the verge needs to be restored in order for surface water to be steered into the drain; unfortunately, yellow spray paint alone is insufficient to do the trick....

New kerb finally installed but, incredibly, still 6 inches away from the drain such that, initially, surface water continued to bypass the drain. This gap has now been filled with a sloping tarmac fillet to divert water into the drain: a bit of a bodge, but it does appear to work!
