Shared Cycle/Walk crossing Botley Rd by Primary School

Reported via desktop in the Road Traffic Signs and Road Markings category anonymously at 19:45, Thursday 21 October 2021 using FixMyStreet Pro

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council less than a minute later

The green phase for cycle and walking across is too short. This seems to have become shorter as a result of the revised crossing here with the Botley Rd Improvements. The last 3 times I crossed in the last 2 weeks there were people with children and bikes on both sides and so they needed to find their ways across in opposite directions while it was green for them. Before they had all got safely across the lights had gone red again.

In addition, this newly updated crossing is still fundamentally dangerous as it was before due to the way it works with queueing traffic going into town often stationary on the crossing or even passing through it while the phase is green for the crossing. I first noticed this when I started using it in 2016 and raised it through Fix My Street. I raised it in two lots of consultation on the Botley Rd improvements and nothing has changed. In the last 6 out of 7 times I have crosse there recently there was either stationary traffic on the crossing or actually passing through it. Today the people crossing on green had to wait until the traffic had moved out of the way so they could cross and then it was no longer green for them.

I have contacted Cyclox and raised this recently and someone has been down to observe the crossing and reported seeing the same problem as I have raised. Something has to be done about this fundamentally dangerous crossing before someone gets hurt. It needs KEEP CLEAR painted infront of the crossing with yellow hatchings as for other junctions.

I'm not happy having to raise this time and time again. My next step will be to write to local councillors in an attempt to get changes.

  • Thank you for your recent report regarding the pedestrian timings at the West Way / Westminster Way junction. The green man time is only the invitation to start to cross and is then followed by a delay before conflicting traffic receives a green signal. The delay period or intergreen, is extended by detection which detects pedestrians who have started to cross on a green man and are established on the crossing. An Engineer has checked the operation of the signals finding the crossings working as intended and without any current faults. As part of the recent works the pedestrian timings were reviewed and increased.

State changed to: No further action
