Confusing change to road markings.

Reported via mobile in the Road markings (NH) category anonymously at 07:56, Thu 26 August 2021

Sent to National Highways less than a minute later

Recently the road has been relaid and new markings have been put down and they are different to what they were before, as I have been driving that way to work for 15 years and I believe them to potentially cause an accident. When leaving the m6 northbound J3 there are 3 lanes. The left lane used to be for taking the first left towards Bedworth and the A444 (1 lane of it) but now the road markings take it into 2 lanes of the A444. Now if you are in the second lane exiting the M6 and follow the new road markings it takes you to the merging lane of the A444 which before it took you into the second lane of the A444. It caught me off guard with the changes as I didn’t see a sign saying change of layout, it doesn’t make sense to have one lane turning into two lanes to go the same direction. If you could look into this please I would be grateful. Thank you

  • Thank you for your patience whilst we looked into your report. The changes at the junction were made to assist traffic flow and ease congestion. Lane 1 on the North bound exit slip road is for left turn onto the A4113 to Bedworth and to the second roundabout exit onto the A444 to Coventry. Lane 2 on the slip road is for the A444 North and South(Coventry & Nuneaton). Lane 3 on the slip road is for the A444 North to Nuneaton. Experience has shown that drivers who use a road regularly for some time, find it difficult to adapt initially, when a change is made. They are 'conditioned' that the road is a certain layout and take a while to adapt to any change in layout. The collision statistics show 5 collisions in 5 years and none this year. The road markings and signs appear to correspond.

We will continue to review this and will arrange any required work if the situation changes.
