  • I have spoken to our contractor and work will hopefully start within the next 10weeks

  • This is still a concern and issue, and worsening. The broken, wooden safety barriers on the bridge, temporarily cordened off with plastic barriers, are also being mishandled by the public and represent a risk particularly as we head into winter and risk of flooding increases.

  • The centre remedial panels are now being stressed to the point they are becoming loose and a trip hazard. The dip when you stand on this part of the bridge is a couple of inches and it feels there is now no support under these remedial panels

  • Has a date been set for the repair. Indicated to be Mid November but what is the set date?

Posted anonymously at 11:45, Fri 15 October 2021

  • Please let us know when you intend to repair the bridge. How will you accommodate foot and cycle users, buggies and mobility scooters, when the work is carried out?

Posted anonymously at 14:02, Fri 15 October 2021

  • This bridge is unsafe and it’s only a matter of time before someone ends up in the river either by the rotting rails or the central path collapsing. This could be a child falling in. It’s shocking that this has been left for so long with no progress.

  • OCC - Please can you provide a further update via this report. You confirmed that work would commence late Nov. As we are now only 4 weeks from then please now update with an actual start date.

Also please confirm that the bridge will not be closed (other than a few minutes for equipment movement) i.e access will be available to all 24/7 during the time of the works.

  • This bridge has been like this for over a year now and disintegrating by the day. So bouncy in the middle that children think it’s fun to use as a trampoline. Weighty mobility scooters also use this which adds to its fragility

  • Hopefully nothing happens to anyone before the repairs are carried out.

  • Absolute joke the bridge is clearly in need of repair the reduced carriage way along with lack of cycle / pedestrian markings across the whole route makes this pleasant cycle/ walk into town route very dangerous

  • Witney council and OCC what’s happening and when?

Posted anonymously at 19:27, Wed 10 November 2021

  • I have contacted OCC and asked them to update this report with the date on which the works are proposed to start - they have previously indicated it would be December. Witney Town Council do not have any control over this, we can simply push for action.

Posted by Witney Town Council at 08:43, Thu 11 November 2021

  • Please push much harder. We need action and a date as soon as possible.

Posted anonymously at 09:15, Thu 11 November 2021

  • The left hand rail (walking into town) is also very unstable and could easily give way if pushed. The bridge is rotten and a danger. I’m surprised that is not been condemned due to health and safety concerns.

  • Thankyou for your enquiry this is on the program to be repaired in January and is scheduled to be inspected this month

Posted by Oxfordshire County Council at 14:00, Thu 11 November 2021

  • Thanks for the update OCC, however if someone gets injured while using this bridge and an enquiry is held as to why it wasn’t looked at in a timely manner will this forum be used as evidence? I don’t get why this isn’t being looked at soon, when so many people are saying it’s a major hazard, I understand that’s there process to follow but there should also be an expedited process for issues such as this even if it’s to protect the council let alone the public using it???

  • Any update?

Posted anonymously at 09:04, Wed 8 December 2021

  • Remedial panels coming loose again because of the rotting bridge. Several Panels drop an inch when walked on and is a trip hazard again. This has been going since July and many promised timelines have been broken. This needs fixing, as well as the safety rails before someone is injured

  • We thought we'd try to get more public exposure of these long standing problems and inactivity by sending a letter in to the Witney Gazette. They contacted a local councillor - and lo and behold they then decided not to publish. Cancel culture in the world of politics !

  • Thankyou for your enquiry. This has been rescheduled to be repaired in Spring due to water levels being high
