Dangerous traffic Island and marking

Heading south on Bournemouth Road, outside the new Village Hotel, the traffic Island and markings create a pinch point. The traffic island juts into the path of vehicles and I've seen many vehicles almost clip it, or swerve.

Could the markings or island be adjusted to make it safer?
