Uncut grass and trees overhanging only pedestrian access route over bridge over great Ouse near Downham Market

Reported via mobile in the Footpaths/ Rights of way (usually not tarmac) category anonymously at 13:29, Wed 16 June 2021

Sent to Norfolk County Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 2796129.

I have cycled from Barroway Drove to Downham Market on occasion and I have seen people walking the same route. If cycling with children or if your fitness isn’t up to cycling over the bridge which is on a bend, you have to dismount and walk your bike along a narrow grass verge right next to the road with traffic passing very close at 40 mph. Once you get onto the actual bridge, pedestrian access is good and separated from the traffic but the access on the lead up to the bridge is inadequate. The path is too narrow to wheel a bike along safely, and the problem is compounded by overhanging trees. This grass needs to be cut to provide a wider path and the trees need cutting back in order for this to be a viable route. Offering provision for less road-confident cyclists at this point could not only reduce cars on the road by providing an alternative means of getting to work, school or the rail station from outlying villages, but also open up the quieter country roads around Barroway Drove to recreational cyclists from Downham market, so would provide multiple benefits to different communities. The photos were taken 2 weeks ago but the situation hasn’t changed in the meantime.

Updates

  • I agree. This area is downright dangerous for cyclists and for any pedestrians who wish to travel beyond the bridge. The road is fast at this point (40MPH limit), and is heavily used by HGVs which tend to hug the kerb because the road is insufficiently wide and the view of oncoming vehicles is compromised by the apex of the bridge.
