Car parking by people living in the flats when they have a car park they could use at the end of the last block.

Reported via desktop in the Car parking category anonymously at 16:32, Wed 9 June 2021

Sent to Breckland District Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 2780184.

Parking down one side of Monksgate causes obstructions to house numbers 1,2,3,4,and 48. All of these homes are obstructed from getting on or off their drive ways. Half the road is taken up by as many as 7 parked cars bumper to bumper from no 48 to the junction Canterbury Way. This means that traffic coming from the bottom of the road has to drive on the wrong side of the road to get to Canterbury Way. Not a problem for the parked cars but if there happens to be a car turning into Monksgate you have a problem because you are driving on the wrong side of the road. An accident waiting to happen. Two months ago a lady died in the flats because of the parked cars the undertakers had to carry her body along the road in a body bag to Canterbury Way because they could not park outside the flats. We have complained to Hanover Housing association but they do nothing. If there was a fire in one of the flats the fire engine would not be able to get anywhere near. Ambulances have the same problem. They have had to carry people going to hospital up to the end of the road. We all pay almost £2000 each year council tax which means we should be able to drive on an off our driveways but our access is blocked by these parked cars they are spoiling our access to our homes. This issue has now been going on for over two years this is since they have started to rent the flats to people 55years and over. The flats were originally built for pensioneers over 65. when there was not many cars so they all used their car park which is located at the end of the third block in Canterbury Way.

Updates

  • I concur with above. Not only is it a health and safety risk to pedestrians and road traffic, but the obstruction of driveways by people parking opposite has become prolific. This situation is exacerbated by the frequent visits by health workers, care staff vehicles and taxis also parking in this area, plus occasional abusers related to the railway station.

The fact that these third parties also use and trespass on local driveways to turn around instead of using an appropriate T junction 100 yards down the road also infuriates.

We have also been in the position of having to allow an ambulance to park on our front lawn to allow suitable local access to the residents of Hanover Court. Whilst we will always offer this service in times of need, it is only necessary because Hanover Court have not applied suitable Health and Safety and Risk Assessment policies regarding duty of care to there residents.

This issue created by policies influenced by the owners and management of Hanover Court could be effectively resolved by the installation of suitable and sufficient off road parking facilities targeted to the needs and facilities of Hanover Court
