Speeding

Reported via desktop in the Roads/highways category anonymously at 16:43, Wednesday 21 April 2021

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 2684135.

We have been living in this location for 18month and there are a high number of vehicles (usually cars and motorbikes) who speed down this section of Shipton Road daily.

The chicane helps during busy periods (school drop off/ pick up times), but outside of this vehicles are excessively speeding, either to join the 60mph country road, or to carry on their speed from the 60mph into the 20mph Shipton Road.

Please could a speed bump be constructed next to the chicane? This would make all vehicles slow down by the school, park, pool car park and blind residential junctions.

I live near to this so I would be happy to meet someone to discuss, thank you.

  • "Traffic Calming. Please see the following link to our website with details of traffic calming. https://www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/ cms/ content/ traffic-calming-and-speed-humps Our very limited resources are focused on areas with a poor accident history and I can at least say our injury accident database shows no significant problem along Shipton Road. We often hear the phrase “does someone have to be hurt before any action is taken?” This paragraph is one often quoted. To a degree it is fair to say that the county will not react until there has been an incident. But this does not mean the county are sitting idly by with an unspent budget and waiting. What we are in fact doing is using our scarce resources to try to address sites where there is an existing and ongoing problem. I’m sure you can appreciate that we must prioritise our resources on current problem sites where people may have been hurt rather than on those sites where someone may or may not get hurt in the future. Ideally if budgets were to allow, we would be only too happy to adopt a proactive approach to accident prevention. The sad truth is we are working with our “hands tied” but we endeavour to do the best we can for residents with the resources available. Regarding the speeding issue, this needs to be reported directly to the Police who are responsible for carrying out enforcement. Not an altogether positive reply I do appreciate but I hope it does at least highlight our position.
