Illegal cycling on pavements in Petersfield now too much of an issue

Reported via desktop in the Other (non-highways) category anonymously at 08:58, Wed 31 March 2021

Sent to East Hampshire District Council and Hampshire County Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 2644375.

This is just one of several places in Petersfield which is now becoming commonplace for illegal cycling on pavements. The biggest problem are youths in late teens or early 20s, who will often attempt to confront pedestrians face to face who do not wish to move out of the way. This happens all day every day across Petersfield and doesn't look good to outsiders. Other bad locations are B2199 Pulens Lane, Station Road (where the one-way system is), and upper Station Road, near the junction to Tilmore Road. All locations do not offer cycling on pavements yet I frequently witness problems to this effect with pedestrians other than myself.

The reason this has been posted on 'Fix My Street' for the council, is because my council tax bill pays for the police, and the figure went up by a whopping 7% this year, yet there is a distinct problem with the attitude coming from the police themselves. When they are present, they are regularly driving right past youths cycling on pavements, even when there is clearly a confrontation between pedestrians and cyclists going on and an obvious danger. As someone with two elderly relatives, of which one is in a wheelchair, this is dangerous, and the lack of authority is really not good.

It has also come to the point where now you have to confront pavement cycling yourself, as there is simply no enforcement! Police can easily ask cyclists to cycle on the road, which barely requires them to stop. There is no excuse for this.

Please do not tell me to ring 101 about this as this is not a relevant number for the problem. Please take this seriously, ask the police, where your and my money goes, to enforce pavement cycling laws when they see an actual crime in progress.

Many thanks.
