Cycle path junction

Reported in the Roads/highways category anonymously at 08:21, Tue 27 March 2012

Sent to Hampshire County Council 4 minutes later. FixMyStreet ref: 241606.

The security barriers at Rownhams services now seem to be permanently open and there is a lot of traffic using the 'private' road to enter or exit the motorway. This is causing a dangerous hazard to cyclists using the cycle path. If the security barriers are going to remain open, warning signs and give way lines should be provided so the traffic is aware of the cycle lane.

Updates

  • Hi John - This is shocking there is no way those barriers should be open unless the intention is to make this into M27 Junction 3A. You might want to add this to the Times' map of UK cycling hazards here. http://www.thetimes.co.uk/ tto/ public/ cyclesafety/ contact/ Please update if you hear anything from the authorities.

  • PS Incidentally I see from the Times' map that there was an accident reported here involving a cyclist:

Occured: 21/10/10 08:45 Severity: Slight Junction Detail: T or staggered junction Colliding Vehicle: Car

  • Good idea about Roadchef - I've emailed them today.

  • Response from Roadchef today: We are in the process of replacing the present barriers on both sides of the road. They have had a lot of damage form the local kids and we are trying to make sure the fix is a permanent one, we have had discussion with the local parish council and they have had there input. We hope to a Permanent fix ASAP and I will keep you in touch with the developments.

  • Ha ha, brilliant writeup Cyclestrian! It's prompted me to write again to Roadchef, Hants CC and (for the first time) Highways Agency. I'll post any progress.

  • Glad you like it! Inspired by ironic/satirical bike blogs such as http://crapwalthamforest.blogspot.co.uk/ and http://cyclingfront.blogspot.co.uk/ . Feel free to share info on M27 Junction 3A with whomever will listen.

Coming up in future posts: a video tour of Rownhams Services, and a made-up interview with Simon Turl, MD of Roadchef. Also fictional new signs for Rownhams lane and driver tips for dodging moving cyclists and elderly coach parties when negotiating this car park.

We can get this sorted: vandal proof security equipment is available -- I'm sure it's expensive but Roadchef has an obligation here. Or how about just locking the barrier shut?

  • I've had replies from both Hants CC and the Highways Agency. Both are going to contact Road Chef-hopefully putting pressure on to get it sorted. I'll pass on any developments.

  • Great to hear the progress John, particularly about the Highways Agency. I have blogged again explaining things a little more clearly. http://m27junction3a.blogspot.co.uk/ 2012/ 09/ seriously.html

  • I went to have a look a the barrier this morning. It was open and four vehicles passed me in the few seconds it took me to cycle down to it from Rownhams Lane. I questioned Roadchef, whose response was ' The North Barrier had been working up until 19th September when a business man had driven straight into it. The barrier is designed to break upon any impact. We are in the process of claiming through the insurance which I have chased today.' I'll keep an eye on any progress.

  • The barriers now open and close with a security pass code being used. Unfortunately it seems to be common knowledge of what the pass code is as there does seem to be rather a lot of traffic passing through here. As well as being dangerous to cyclists and pedestrians the area is now more effected by litter, what with MacDonald's and Costa Coffee now being on this site. Certain individuals buy there burger and coffees, pass through the barriers and dump their litter onto the streets of Rownhams and Lordshill. It's about time these barriers were looked at more seriously.
