Bilton Road - House Shaking Caused By Traffic
Reported in the Road or pavement defect category anonymously at 18:00, Mon 26 March 2012
Sent to Ealing 5 minutes later. FixMyStreet ref: 241462.
I have lived on Bilton Road for many years and the 297 double-decker bus use to be the only large vehicle travelling along the road. Unfortunately in more recent times the road is being used by a variety of large vehicles such as freight trucks, heavy goods (HGV) and construction vehicles. The rise in usage has undoubtedly contributed towards the wear and tear of the road and as of such my house now constantly shakes whenever a large vehicle (including buses) travels past. It is especially bad when they travel at speeds and sometimes hit the speed bumps, where the vibration can be felt 200 yards away! In particular I have noticed that the road to the front of our drive way (which had previous works done to it) has now sunk down and shows cracking. My house seems to shake more violently whenever a large vehicle passes on it. The impact of all this constant shaking has led to the walls in my house to crack, both internally and externally. My window frames are always making a ‘clicking’ sound as though they are being bent out of shape. Mentally, apart from being awakened in the middle of the night by the shaking, I am always worrying that either the walls or my windows will break.
Initially I would like to see the road in front of my drive strengthened (filled in). Secondly, find out if an alternative route could be enforced for all large vehicles. Thirdly, if an alternative route cannot be enforced, speed camera’s should be considered and the road humps removed.

I have been advised by Ealing Council to write to the Highway Services. I have forwarded my email.
''We are unable to action your enquiry as it does not meet the Council's agreed criteria for repair. Your enquiry is now closed. If you need further information, please email highwayservices@ealing.gov.uk. Thank you Ealing Council''

The Highway Services inspected the sunken patch yesterday (28th March - quicker than I expected) and wrote to me this morning. Here's what they wrote:
"Thank you for your email dated 26 & 27 March 2012 concerning vibration to your house due to the increasing traffic on the Bilton Road. Bilton Road is the main road linking Wadsworth and Aintree Road industrial area to Western Avenue including Perivale residential area. Therefore, no weight restrictions applies to the section of Bilton Road between Manor Farm Road and Horsenden Lane South.
Following your email one of our engineer visited this location and found no defects in the vicinity of your property on Bilton Road, which meets the Council's safety inspection criteria for urgent repairs. However, it is agreed that there is small-patched carriageway area outside your property, which is showing some signs of deterioration and it may be contributing to the problem. Although this defect does not meet the intervention level but Highways has issued a works order to the contractor to carry out repairs to the cracked surface area as one off job deviating from the Council's Policy for minor repairs. These works will takes place within next five weeks.
Your request to "find alternative route for large vehicles, deploying a speed camera and removal of traffic calming measures", I have forward a copy of your email to LBE's Transport Planning Service requesting to investigate and respond directly to you about their findings and the proposed actions, if any. Should you require any further information concerning this please contact Customer Services on telephone 0208 825 6000 to speak to one of the Transport Planning Engineers."
As you can see the Highway Services for Ealing has responded to my concerns immediately, although I will have to wait a while for the works to be carried out. I am extremely satisfied with Ealing's fast response regarding this matter and look forward to the re-surfacing of the road, plus whether any improvements can be made regarding the large vehicles. I will update this case once the works have been carried out.

Works have yet to be carried out but I have had a response from the Transport Planning Service regarding large vehicles travelling along Bilton Road...
Dear Mr,
I have been passed your query regarding enforcing alternative routes for large vehicles and/or consider alternative methods to mitigate the impact of their movements. As part of our on going Neighbourhood programme in Perivale, together with other measures, we have recently installed improved and new directional signage to direct HGVs drivers to access the local industrial estates via alternative routes avoiding Bilton Road. Bilton Road is also covered by an overnight lorry ban which is enforced by London Council. We have been liaising with London Council to ensure that the ban is properly enforced. Having saying that, I will add your request on our list of resident requests and we will further investigate if additional measures can be adopted.
Yours sincerely,
Senior Transport Planner Transport Planning Service

I was surprised how quickly Ealing Council responded to my 'concern'. The council estimate that repairs to the road in question would be fixed within 5 weeks, this has yet to happen.

6 weeks have now past. email to council again.
Dear Sir / Madam You last wrote to me on the 29th March advising that within 5 weeks the uneven/damage road outside my property would be repaired, unfortunately this has yet to happen. Please can you inform me when this is due to take place?

Works finally carried out on the 22nd May!
From my previous update when I chased the council, I had never heard back from them. Over the next few days I had seen some workmen assessing my part of the road therefore presumed they were looking to repair my problem. Since the repair had been carried out there has certainly been less vibrations to the house which I am most happy about. Unfortunately once the damage had been done, it can never be fully repaired, therefore our house will always feel the tremors of large vehicles passing through.
