Lavender overgrowing footpath becoming a serious hazard

Reported in the Grass and Hedges category anonymously at 15:02, Friday 17 July 2020 using FixMyStreet Pro

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 2204992.

The owners are growing lavender from their property but it is now causing a serious hazard to pedestrians and families with small children.

It is very lovely but it is now just out of control. It really needs to be maintained at a more manageable size.

  • Thank you for your report. I have visited the site pinpointed on the map, which I assume is in front of 56 Arthray Road, see photos?

  • Thank you for the update, yes, unsurprisingly that is the obstruction.

Its very bitter-sweet, as I really like the bush but it is now, sadly, too big.

  • Thank you for your report. I have visited the site and assessed the problem that you have identified. I have requested a 28 day notice be sent to the residents or owners of 56 Arthray Road to cut back or remove the lavender, obstructing the footway, that they have planted on our verge.

  • Thank you for your report. I have handed a 14 day notice to the residents or owners of 56 Arthray Road to cut back or remove the lavender, obstructing the footway, that they have planted on our verge. They said that they had cut it back a bit and as it was a rented property they would inform the landlord, of our request, to cut back or remove more.

  • Thank you for your report. The residents or owners of 56 Arthray Road appear to have cut back enough of the lavender, on our verge, obstructing the footway and I have removed the vegetation around the base of the telegraph pole. This allows reasonable access past the site, see photo.

  • Thank you for your report. The residents or owners of 56 Arthray Road appear to have trimmed back some of the lavender, on our verge, obstructing the footway and I have removed the vegetation around the base of the telegraph pole. This allows reasonable access past the site, see photo.
In the meantime, the letter sent to the landowner, or residents of 56 Arthray Road, asking them to cut back their lavender has been cancelled, as it's not their verge the lavender is growing from. This problem lavender, growing from our verge, is our responsibility and has instead been submitted, to one of our teams, to be cut back or remove.
Please be aware, however, that the budget for cutting back vegetation is now completely spent for this financial year and we have been instructed not to raise anything further. This request for vegetation cut backs will be held on to for the time being. This report will, therefore, be logged and assessed for inclusion in future programmed works, subject to there being no conflicting works and sufficient funds.
