Public Road or not?

Close to the junction of Slade Road and Hillmorton Road, there is a small parade of shops;there is a small service road in front of these. There are two other parking areas adjacent, one of which is gated, the other is not. Each of these adjacent areas has signs saying "Star Computers: Customer Parking Only". Noting these I parked on the service road outside Star Computers shop window. In the window there was a sign saying words to the effect. Star Computers Customer Only. I checked that there were no road markings, which there weren't and parked. When I returned to the car, I found an A4 leaflet under my windscreen wiper which asked not to park there in future as this parking space was for "Star" customers only. The very last sentence informed me that my registration number had been noted? Does he own that paricular space? If not, is he legally entitled to issue such a notice? Whether he does or not, is he legally entitled to place a leaflet under my windscreen wiper? Finally, is he within his rights to keep a register of registration numbers? I would really appreciate some clarification. I am retired now, due to ill health and I would really rather avoid a confrontation? Thank you.
History repeated itself on 24 December. He did it all again. When I showed him he e-mail reply I had received from Warks CC; he dismissed it as "bullshit". Following a number of similar complaints, the matter is now in the hands of the police and progress has not been speedy!
