Dangerous Junction

The A272 is a fast and busy road especially between Cowfold and the A24. The junction at Maplehurst Road and Littleworth Road (Champions Gate) is especially dangerous. The cars are usually travelling at about 60mph at this point and it is very difficult to assess when it it safe either to enter the road or to cross it. There is only an inadequate giveaway /slow sign to warn drivers of the hazard.

  • This is a very dangerous junction. The road between Cowfold and the A24 is very fast.

    When crossing or entering the road from the Maplehurst or Littleworth directions a driver or cyclist needs to be extremely careful but there is no warning signage from the Maplehurst direction until you are at the junction. From the Littleworth side there is signage but it tends to be overgrown or partially obstructed. A driver turning towards the A24 has to come virtually onto the road in order to see the fast traffic approaching from Cowfold.

    I have witnessed two accidents at this junction recently one serious and involving a cyclist and the other two cars. The road is a nightmare for unwitting cyclists, in particular.

  • There is now stop sign and road makings on the Maplehurst Road side of the intersection but this does not address the issue of traffic speed on the A272 or the difficulty for drivers entering or crossing that very busy road. There is no warning sign for drivers on Maplehurst Road who are approaching the main road from over a hill and around a blind corner.

  • The traffic on the A272 still hurdles along and makes crossing or entering the Justin with Maplehurst and Littleworth Road extremely perilous - especially for the many cyclists. There is no signage on the A272 to warn the motorists how dangerous the crossroad is.

  • There was a major incident just beside the crossroads just over a week ago involving a van and a lorry. The driver of the van had to br airlifted to hospital. This shows how dangerous the road is at this point.
