Good bus shelter replaced by bad
Reported in the Bus stop (shelter) category by Ben Ward at 11:51, Wed 9 April 2008
Sent to Oxford City Council 4 minutes later. FixMyStreet ref: 20498.
The residents of Littlemore Hospital would sit and watch the world go by from the bus shelter, giving them an escape from sitting in a non-smoking hospital. Now, thanks to Clear Channel and their advertising-friendly shelters, the residents can sit on the intentionally uncomfortable seat while looking at the fence.
I'm sure having bus stops subsidised by an international advertising giant saves on our council tax, but what does it do for the well-being of the mental health residents or the clutter of the street?

Just to echo Ben's poetic sentiments here.
The old bus shelter was unobtrusive, set back from the road and contained a proper seat. The replacement gives an uncomfortable seat, and causes the pavement to be blocked by the queue sheltering.
The concrete base for the old shelter has been left behind and looks rather forlorn.
Oh, and the light doesn't work in the new shelter.

Predictably corporate response received from City Council.
From the information I received this shelter is considered an improvement and easier to maintain. And apparently non-smoking too.
It seems this is a non-advertising shelter, so that's a good thing I suppose.
I have contacted my councillor John Tanner who is looking into getting a bench from the Parish Council for the hospital residents.
I think I'll stick to potholes from now on.

I contacted my Councillor about this as, again, this is not considered to be an issue by the council's normal process.
The response I received was positive.
