Sticky-out bus stops!
Reported in the Bus stops category anonymously at 10:08, Fri 9 September 2011
Sent to Bristol City Council 2 minutes later. FixMyStreet ref: 201952.
User David Mock commented: "The new 'sticky-out' bus stops introduced on Fishponds Road are dangerous and anti-social." Now all traffic including bicycles and emergency service vehicles are prevented from passing the bus without pulling out into the opposite lane and facing oncoming traffic." It's a traffic incident waiting to happen and causes congestion and anti social behaviour! They need to be removed immediately!

An accident occurred about 3 weeks ago on Fishponds Road where one of the new built-out bus stops may have been a contributing factor.
A double-decker bus hit the trunk of a road-side tree and the collision ripped the roof of the bus right off. There were a number of casualties but fortunately no fatalities.
The tree was exactly opposite a build-out bus stop and, in anticipation of the accident report, speculation is rising that the bus was forced closer to the tree by the constriction in the road and oncoming traffic.
250 buses a day use this route and this was the 8th bus to use the route that morning. It was first thought that the bus may have hit a low hanging branch but on inspection part of the bus roof could be seen embedded in the tree trunk.
The photo shows the view from the top deck of the bus where it stopped and behind it the roof lying on the ground next to the tree that it hit. On the opposite side of the road from the roof/tree is the built-out bus stop.
Some people have already voiced concerns that since the council have spent so much money on these bus stops against vocal public opinion, the bus stop may not be mentioned in the accident report.
The Bristol Evening Post have already run a three-page article on the potential dangers of these built-out bus stops and the councils continued installation of the same unpopular design on other routes in the city.

Here is the photo from the front page of the Bristol Evening Post (28 October 2011) showing the built-out bus stop opposite the tree that the other bus collided with.
Note the bus stopped at the built-out bus stop causing vehicles behind to attempt to pass the bus in the opposite carriageway. In turn this causes on-coming vehicles to swerve to avoid vehicles overtaking the bus.
