Severe Road Vibration on School Road as you approach traffic lights at Ash Tree Public House cross roads.
Reported anonymously at 16:14, Tue 18 February 2020
Sent to Spelthorne Borough Council and Surrey County Council 3 minutes later. FixMyStreet ref: 2006812.
Photo 1 - Sunken man hole cover in main road behind lamp post. Continually, a loud noise Is heard as vehicles particularly, HGV go over the drain.
Photo 2/3 - Both Main Road and Slip Road are starting to crack more and more causing extreme vibration to local houses throughout the day and night. We have lived here approx 36 years and it’s never been as bad as this which is a worry as i believe there is a Well cavity ? in or around the area where the main road is seen cracking across the road in Photo 2. Large cracks can also be seen appearing in the slip road adjacent which are seemingly getting worse. Not wishing to scare monger but we often here more and more of sink holes appearing and I would hate to think there is a chance of this happening along such an extremely busy road. Issue has been happening a few months now and seems to be getting worse.
I also notice someone else prior to me has reported extreme vibration in the School Road area so there is substance in this report.

Cracks on the slip road ( as shown in pictures )appear to be getting wider. Vibration on main road running alongside slip road and also extreme noise often heard during day and night appears to be due to the broken, loose and sunken manhole cover close to this area. I highlighted this very same issue to Spelthorne Council directly via email quite some time back but to date nothing has been done to eradicate the problem.

There is not a "well cavity" it is almost a mile from the nearest old main gravel workings, but the gravel is going to be parched given the removal of all exposed green in the 1960s and gravel so close to the surface in Ashford means holes that become big VERY quickly and this soil spreads the vibration like an amplified drum as you mention.

There was a big circular pond where the Ash Tree stands, and the same footprint to its west. The only big excavation of soil for hundreds of metres around.
I'm sure your conveyancer told you this and indeed your own studies before you bought the place.

One of our neighbours who has lived in the area for some time now and lives opposite claims he has seen what he believes to be a Well below the road outside his property. The vibration appears to stem from a sunken and damaged manhole cover on the main road close to the area. Every time a Heavy Goods Vehicle hits the the sunken manhole there is often a load bang and shudder in the area. I have received an email from the council telling me this will be fixed by the 14 June. I certainly hope so because I first reported this to them as far back a February. Since I reported this issue there is now another Sunken Manhole Cover about 20 yards away near the traffic lights also having a similar effect. I sincerely hope the council are true to there word. We shall wait with interest and see 👍

1. Have you actually looked at the National Library of Scotland free map link provided. Obviously you are going to get settlement for 100s of years given the artificial pond that stood there.
2. It's not 'the Council' it's one of two, i.e. Surrey plus Thames Water who more particularly never laid the covers to withstand the sort of lorries we see today.
3. Sorry to be accurate but wells are completely irrelevant. The very first houses probably didn't have them here, though may have had latrines, as there was a stonking great big pond.

No I haven’t seen the map/s but based on what your saying it would certainly make more sense than it being a Well. Highly possible my neighbour thought he saw a Well when in fact it was part of something far bigger as you describe ? I’m pretty sure the size of vehicles today don’t help either. Especially, when they are far exceeding the speed limit In order to beat the traffic lights. It happens all the time. Even blatantly going through on Red. My take on it is start by fixing the manhole covers and work from there. If the problem continues thereafter, then it must be something more sinister. Continuation of Average Speed Cameras installed in Charlton Village would also help the problem I’m sure but that’s another story.
