I write to you regarding the drainage problem you have which is causing the road to flood outside Bainton near the railway crossing. Your contractors on Thursday were pumping the water off the road onto my sugar beet field. I complained to the council representative who was there at the time and he stopped this and instead pumped the water up to the crossing drain. I understand you have root ingress in the underground pipe that takes the water from the drain in the road and discharges near the railway into the open drain that goes under the railway into the roadside dyke. Obviously this needs rectifying but there is an additional problem you need to be aware of, which is the drain under the railway has been reduced many years ago by Network Rail installing tubes into the original large drain. Subsequently Network Rail and other service providers have used these tubes to take cables under the railway. The most recent being Gigaclear. This has had the effect of reducing the capacity of these tubes to take the drainage water. If it is possible for you to overcome these problems it would be of tremendous service to the community in keeping this road open. I look forward to hearing from you.

We are aware of the situation with the pipe culverts under the railway line, this said all of the surface water removed from the carriageway surface was pumped into the open ditch which in turn flowed under the railway to the receiving downstream ditch. As quick as we pumped the water, via a 6 inch pump the water flowed away with no issues of this backing up, clearing we were pumping ata greater velocity of that of a heavy rain storm, therefore, it appears the culverts under the railway, are coping adequately at this present time, this said we will continue to monitor this. You are correct in stipulating their is root ingress within the existing pipe system, the majority of this was removed via a hydro root cutter on Tuesday 21st January, we are returning on Monday 27th to ensure the remainder of the upstream pipe work I see clear and free flowing.
We may then have to program in a cctv survey in the summer if 2020 as clearing the root infestation is getting in via open joints or potential cracks in the pipe work, if this proves to be the case we will undertake localised patch liner repairs to the 300mm diameter pipe.
