Dangerous right turn at traffic lights

Reported in the Roads/highways category anonymously at 11:38, Thu 23 June 2011 ; (there is no pin shown as the user did not use the map)

Sent to Norfolk County Council 1 minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 190833.

At junction outside James Paget Hospital,Gorleston-On-Sea, Traffic lights allow a filter lane to turn right across southbound traffic[A12 Lowestoft Rd.]Several times, because of vision being obstructed by traffic waiting to turn into the hospital, cars edge forward to turn in towards Cliff Park school across 2 lanes of southbound traffic in a 40 mph restricted area, and I have had to brake to avoid collisions. These are often mums on the school run. There is a filter lane a couple of hundred yards further on which could be used to turn right into Bridge Rd and then Kennedy Ave[ the school's location]which would allow far better visionand also noy block the offside[ North direction]lane. I suggest the filter[turn right opposite the hospital] be removed and a No right turn sign installed. This is an accident waiting to happen which could easily be avoided.I am an ex police officer and currently a crime reduction officer for the police and problem solving is part of my role.I ask that NCC Highways are contacted regarding this as it is a trunk road.

  • Not good; there was a reply of sorts, which did not address the issues. It seems that nothing is being done; The school autumn term starts shortly and the problem will return with parents trying to turn right to get to Cliff Park School, opposite the Hospital main entrance. They cross 2 lanes of southbound traffic and very often with vision blocked by static vehicles waiting to turn right into the hospital. An accident will happen here, it is just a case of when. My suggestion was to stop right turns here and allow traffic to use the right filter lane 150 yards further on into Bridge Rd.I would like you to forward this again to the Highway dept NCC and request a reply which addresses the issues.
