Ongoing Water leak causing a hazard

Reported in the Highways category anonymously at 01:09, Tue 5 November 2019

Sent to Barnet Borough Council 1 minute later

There is an going serious water leak under the pavement which has not been repaired effectively by the various water utility companies despite several attempts. The last attempt at tracing & repairing this leak was approximately two weeks ago when the pavement opposite number 95 Lyndhurst was dug up then simply refilled when they could not figure out where the leak was coming from. So the only result of those works was to push the leak further along the road, so it is now appearing in two new large areas in the road as well as the original one area in the pavement The water is now coming Up and through the surface of the road making it permanently wet, creating the real risk of a sinkhole occurring, but also once the cold weather hits then the road surface will effectively become an ice rink and consequently be extremely hazardous for pedestrians and vehicles.

  • Council are too ready to try and pass the buck to anyone else. We’ve had 3 standard letters from them and had to re-explain the same problem 3 times to them even though each reply they send , they quote their own case reference that that assigned at the outset. But even though it’s a clear hazard for cars and pedestrians and even though each of their replies informs us that ‘they are responsible for pathways and highways’ , clearly they have no actual care or concern about these hazards that exist with these very things that Barnet Council admit openly that they have ultimate responsibility for. So the problem will continue and this will cause personal injury and property damage.

  • The problem of the hazard with the highway and the pathways has been reported to Barnet several times by myself and others yet the council respond by stating effectively that ‘this is not their problem as they only have responsibility for highways and pathways’ The water is visibly flowing up through the surfaces of the road and the pavement, over the road surface and along the gullies into the road rainwater drains.

  • Nothing at all has happened. The neighbours are having to wash the dirt and soil off the pavement that is being washed up from the water flow that’s coming out of the pavement and up through the tarmac Everyone is just now waiting for a sinkhole to appear

  • Still Nothing has been done. Still the pavement is covered in soil from the water slowly oozing up. The paving slabs are even more sunk and uneven. Still the street is covered in mud and debris and the constant flow of water
