Smell of smoke every single night - cannot open windows even though it is hot
Reported anonymously at 21:27, Wed 20 April 2011
Sent to Basildon Borough Council and Essex County Council 3 minutes later. FixMyStreet ref: 180890.
There has been a constant smell of smoke drifting around Tanswell Avenue for over a week. I think it may be coming from a local farmers field but we cannot so far figure out where. We have a 10 month old baby & we cannot even keep windows open for her at night to keep her room cool in this recent hot weather. It is really starting to get us down. The smoke seems to start around 8.30 to 9.00 pm almost every night. It is so bad that if you a keep a window open it makes all our rooms stink. This is not good for our baby & so we have to close the windows and have her in a hot room instead. It is not on & needs to be sorted out. A neighbor in a nearby street was having fires in his back garden. This was reported & Basildon Council are helping in this matter. This other smoke is from another source.

My husband has spent an hour driving around tonight to find where the smoke is coming from. It is coming from a field (something on a field, maybe a heap of something) on land next to the A127 on the side of Altons garden centre. The smoke is very thick here on the A127!! It is drifting through through several housing estates including burnt mills & our estate, more or less anywhere in direct line of the land! Unfortunately we are in direct line of it & so when the wind blows we cop it. This needs investigating as it is a real nuisance & i'm sure it must be bothering many other people. We should all be able to open our windows & have clean air to breathe in & to cool our homes. It is unacceptable that the culprits of the smoke are allowed to burn on a daily basis.

The smoke has thankfully stopped in the last 3 weeks. We do not know if the council fixed the problem as we didn't hear any news from the environmental officer on the case. Fingers crossed that the smoke doesn't reoccur!

The smoke is back! We have had it for 3 days nows. There is so much of it that it is now coming down the chimney & so closing the windows isn't really helping. It is so pungent that it is stinking the whole house out. We are having to keep all windows shut even though it is summer. Nights are unbearably hot & my baby is having to sleep in a hot bedroom once again as we cannot open her window. Fabulous! The culprit obviously doesn't give a damn about the residents. We cant even have the air con machine on as the hose has to go out of the window. It's a complete joke. We put up with it in April & now in the height of summer we have to put up with it again.

Smoke yet again in Tanswell Avenue area, coming from somewhere in Pitsea. Every time there's a hot day the smoke comes ... Starts around 7-9pm & goes on most of the night. Very selfish of whomever is doing it. Have to close windows as our rooms fill up with disgusting smoke. Not healthy for us or our little girl. Does anyone know where this is coming from? We had it all last summer too. Any help appreciated!
