Multiple failures of surface water drainage and road surface
Reported in the Roads/highways category anonymously at 10:20, Sun 29 September 2019
Sent to North Yorkshire Council 4 minutes later. FixMyStreet ref: 1784874.
The surface water drainage and road surface has failed. The ACO drain has collapsed and the road surface has many holes and sunken/broken areas. Surface water largely misses the drains/gulleys due to the sinking/erosion of the road surface and the many old patch-up repairs which are now visibly sinking several cms/inches in many places. The first photo shows a 30 cm deep cavern (visible in several holes in the road, many metres apart) beneath the road surface, where there is a stream of water when it rains as the surface water drainage has also failed up the road. The key issue is the gully and ACO drain at the end of the public road, together with the eroded, sunken (~6") road surface around that area. Rain water flows between the ACO drain and gully in the second photo. This is causing flooding, erosion and land slip on the private land down the hill, the Virgin Media pipe to flood and pour with water (photo 3). There are many more photos and I have reported issues on this road to the council twice previously this year, though the road by the ACO drain collapsed several years ago (already visible when I moved here in 2016). The council have marked up the worst area with white paint but done nothing since. Consequently, the potholes and previously repaired areas/channels continue to erode and deepen (visibly increasing by the month now). The entire road and pavements are in an extremely poor state yet have had no repairs at all for years, despite neighbouring roads (already in much better shape) receiving surface dressing this year. Anyone walking on the pavements is at serious risk of tripping given the almost ubiquitous large cracks all the way down the Close.

Trenches continue to sink visibly, surface water runs though and under trenches, rather than into the drains/gulleys (which are now raised above the road surface.) Erosion continues visibly. Drain trench has sunk 10cm (and increasing) along a couple of metres length causing punctures. Holes at the side of drain are 15cm deep (10m uphill there is a hole over 30cm deep now, with a stream running due to failed surface water drainage uphill) ACO drain is so damaged/collapsed that surface water collected is leaking/running out of the damaged drain rather than along the pipe under the grate and causing more erosion of the road and of private land downhill. No evidence of any visit by NYCC since I reported this, despite it already being marked fir repair several months earlier.

After no progress, contacted the local Councillor, who chased on my behalf. He was very good, and followed up, telling me the road would be repaired within two weeks. It’s now over three weeks and still no repairs done (though there is more white paint sprayed on some of the areas that need repairing.

The Councillor has reported that the Council will do a full resurfacing and repair of the broken drainage system in April, when new funds are available. Meanwhile the surface continues to deteriorate visibly by the week due to the subterranean water flow washing down the street

Cllr has confirmed that our Close is in the Council budget/plans for next financial year. Road is falling apart rather rapidly, troughs getting deeper and drainage failures increasing. Let’s see if the road collapses before they repair it.......

Problems getting worse and worse. MP and Councillor both now on the case but still waiting for Council to actually repair the collapsed drainage and ensure the water flowing on and beneath the road enters the drainage system. Apparently a repair of the drainage channel was scheduled a couple of weeks ago but then cancelled due to emergency work after the heavy rains. No sight nor sound of NYCC since then and still no planned work for the resurfacing.

Drainage channel replaced with bigger one. Very good solution - shame it’s taken years to action and only after our MP got involved. But, the road has been surface-dressed and, after only four weeks, is already falling apart with cracks, holes reappearing and weeds already growing in the cracks, edges. Surface dressing was a total waste of money, road needs repairing properly.
