Sinkhole in middle of road

Reported in the Carriageway Defect category anonymously at 13:55, Thursday 22 August 2019

Sent to Oxford City Council 4 minutes later

There is a sinkhole in the middle of the road around foot square. You can peer into the hole and see about 3 feet deep. The hole seems to be much wider below the tarmac.

  • The road has been made safe, by erecting temporary barries around the hole. Several teams have come to inspect, but nothing has been done to fix the problem.

  • Still nothing has been done to fix the hole - the street is still obstructed by barriers; however, this has a major beneficial unintended consequence, since it greatly improves the safety of cyclists emerging from the cycle track (national Cycle Network Route 51), by enabling much greater visibility before encroaching on the path of eastbound traffic on Lonsdale Road, and reduces the speed of cars as the road is reduced to a single lane, with an effective chicane. Repair of the sinkhole should be used as an opportunity to make permanent this feature.
