I submitted a previous report about this problem on Marston Ferry Road (with virtually the same subject title). There, I point out the risk posed to the cyclists because of the narrowing of the road there. Here, I wish to add the following. There was the original traffic light at the spot. I had driven through this spot in the last 20 years and the traffic light had never caused any congestion. In addition and very importantly, the traffic light provided safety for many school children (going to Cherwell School and St. Nicolas School) and other pedestrians to cross the road. Now, the traffic light is being replaced by a pedestrian island in the middle of the road. This change will provide no improvement to traffic congestion since there was no congestion in the first place, but this change, with the traffic light removed, will increase the risk for the children crossing the road. That is, it is safer for the children to have the traffic light rather than the pedestrian island. And for the drivers, the island will provide no added benefit. Hence, the replacement of the traffic light by the pedestrian island results in a worse safety condition for pedestrians, and no benefit to the drivers. Hence, the reasons and the decision for this replacement need to be thought through again, for the sake of children safety and the safety of other pedestrians such as elderly people.
